Honours even between Longlevens and Cirencester.

Pre-Season Friendly

Longlevens  1 - 1  Cirencester Town

Cirencester were on the road again for their latest pre-season friendly as they made the short journey to Gloucester to face Longlevens who are managed by James French – Manager of The Cirencester Arena.

Last season the home side finished 10th in the Hellenic League Premier Division – their first in the Premier Division having been promoted as Champions of Division 1 West at the end of the previous season.

The Cirencester starting eleven had two changes to the team that faced Larkhall Athletic on Saturday as Harvey Rivers was unable to take his place in goal due to a slight injury and as a result Longlevens loaned the visitors Mark Harris. The other change was the inclusion of James Mortimer-Jones (unavailable Saturday) in place of Elliott Green.

Longlevens kicked off on a firm, dry pitch and exchanges were fairly even during the first quarter with both sides creating opportunities. The Cirencester right flank was particularly prominent with Jon Else and Aidan Bennett linking well.

As the half progressed Cirencester played some controlled passing football as they worked the ball from back to front but they were unable to break through a stubborn home defence.

Shortly before the interval a Bennett cross was punched clear to James Mortimer-Jones just outside the box but his resulting drive was wide of the right post.

Longlevens started the second half strongly and had three pots at goal within the first 5 minutes.

Cirencester responded with low crosses from both flanks that passed through the home box without contact from a Centurion but it was the visitors who opened the scoring when a defensive header flew high into the air and as it dropped CHARLIE GRIFFIN struck a superb volley into the top right corner.

The home side equalised fifteen minutes later after Josh Westcarr launched a ‘throw-in’ into the Cirencester penalty area and when it reached SCOTT MONTGOMERY he finished confidently with a well struck volley inside the left post.

The game remained ‘end-to-end’ but neither side was able to add another goal.
