The managers latest interview with the Echo
Cirencester Town manager Brian Hughes has confirmed he wants to keep hold of Zack Kotwica – either on loan or permanently. The winger is currently on loan with the Centurions until the end of this month but he has already been told by parent club Cheltenham Town that his contract will not be renewed at the end of the season.
Having been impressed by Kotwica, Hughes is planning talks with the youngster and Robins boss Gary Johnson to see if the deal can be extended and admits he would be interested in taking him on longer term if the opportunity arises.
Hughes said: "We've got some work to do on that. We'd like Zack to stay. I think he's enjoyed himself. It's taken his mind off some of the trials and tribulations of being at Cheltenham I think. We need to talk about what he wants to do. He's still got a contract, I don't know if Cheltenham are offering to pay him up then he might consider leaving but I think he'll probably go out on loan again after Christmas and hopefully it will be to us. We just like the kid. When he first came he was understandably down in the dumps and I think we've given him something to get up in the morning for to go and play football.
"I think he's enjoyed being here, we've enjoyed him and he's come out of his shell since he's been here. It's obviously difficult for him when he goes training but this has been a good release for him and hopefully he'll stay."
Cirencester's sole focus will now be on climbing away from the bottom of the Southern League Premier Division following their first round exit of the FA Trophy in midweek, when they lost to a controversial late penalty against National League South side Truro City in a replay at home.
Currently seven points above the relegation zone in 18th position, they welcome a Cambridge City side just four places above them to the Corinium Stadium on Saturday.
Hughes said: "Our league form needs addressing. We've neglected it a little bit. We were second at one stage and flying along and slipped to seventh from bottom. We need some league points and our performances have improved as the Trophy competition's been moving on and we need to bring some of that form into some league results and get some points. Our season is in dire need of points and we need to get on with it on Saturday."
Cirencester will assess striker Charlie Griffin, who has been struggling with hamstring and knee problems, before the game.
