Determined Cirencester move into the 1st Round of the FA Trophy with victory over Gosport Borough of the National League South.

Cirencester Town   2  -  1   Gosport Borough

In appalling weather conditions, strong wind and heavy rain throughout, Cirencester defeated Gosport Borough of the National League South to move into the 1st Round of the FA Trophy for the first time since the 2010-11 season when they lost in a replay at Gloucester City.

As in the previous round Cirencester had the perfect start as CHARLIE GRIFFIN scored in the 2nd minute with a precise finish inside the near right post.

Just before the half hour CHARLIE GRIFFIN increased the lead when he placed a diving header inside the right post.

Gosport Borough pulled a goal back seven minutes later as BRETT POATE latched onto an attempted clearance following a corner kick and tucked it into the net.

Cirencester had the ball in the net just before half time but it was ruled out for ‘offside’.

As expected Gosport put Cirencester under a lot of pressure after the interval and enjoyed most of the possession but a determined home side, playing into the strong wind and rain, stood firm to go through to the 1st Round of the competition – the stage when National League sides enter the fray.
