Cirencester Town Under 16s win County Cup

The Gloucestershire Under 16 County Cup Final was contested at GFA Headquarters between Cirencester Town and Thornbury Town under floodlights in very difficult conditions.

The game started with Ciren playing into the swirling wind and rain. Thornbury adapted well, they were strong in the tackle and broke with blistering pace down the flanks.

After about 13 mins a lofted ball into the box slipped out of the Ciren Keeper’s hands and dropped at the feet of the Thornbury striker to side foot home, 0-1.

The Bristol side then gained momentum and gradually started to take control.

Ciren were struggling to create until the 30th minute when the ball was played out to the right to Max Lloyd.

After looking like he had missed his opportunity Lloyd whipped over a cross to the back post where Boyan Thorpe was on hand to nod the ball back across the goal into the corner of the net, 1-1.

The equaliser lifted the whole team and now Ciren were on the front foot.

After about 35 mins another free kick was awarded when Ben Holley delicately chipped into the box where Jack Uzzell was on hand with a cheeky back header over the advancing keeper, 2-1 Ciren.

The 2nd half started with the re-introduction of Josh Coombe who had ridden a few torrid challenges in the first half and enter the tireless Nouman Farooq Bhatti which seemed to give Ciren another dimension.

Now starting to dominate, another corner was awarded where Lewis Newman timed his run perfectly to stab home to make it 3-1.

Endless attacks were thwarted by the Thornbury Keeper denying Kallum Cooper on a couple of occasions.

As the game looked like it would end up 3-1 another free kick was awarded 15 yds inside the Ciren half.

Up stepped Jordan Day who launched the ball towards the penalty area. Wind assisted and gaining momentum the ball was too much for the Keeper to deal with as it dipped over his head into the roof of the net.

The 65 yard effort capped a fantastic comeback to make the final score 4-1 to Cirencester who were crowned Gloucestershire FA Under 16 County Cup Champions.

All 16 players made a major contribution in the game and must be commended on a real squad performance.
