Academy unlucky to lose at Forest Green in FA Youth Cup

F.A. Youth Cup 3rd Round Qualifying

Forest Green Rovers 3 - 1 Cirencester Town

Cirencester made the short journey to Nailsworth to play neighbour’s Forest Green Rovers in the third and final qualfying round of the FA Youth Cup.

The game went ahead despite the torrential rain, with the pitch just about playable.

Forest Green took the lead after just 3 minutes when Joe Martin outpaced the Cirencester defence to score.

Both sides tried to play a controlled passing game in difficult conditions with the pace of the ball varying because of water lying on the pitch in some areas.

The conditions played their part in Forest Green’s second goal. Forest Green striker Joe Martin raced on to a through ball and collided with Cirencester goalkeeper Will Miller on the edge of the penalty area. The referee awarded penalty which Forest Green converted and booked Will Miller.

Miller was injured in the challenge, he continued until half time but had to replaced by striker Tom Mazur for the second half. Miller went to Hospital where X-rays confirmed a broken jaw and he was due to have operation today.

Cirencester dominated the second half, determined to get back in the game. Forest Green rarely troubled Tom Mazur in the Cirencester goal, with Cirencester pressing forward continually.

However, despite this pressure it took until the 78th minute for Cirencester to score. Gareth James picked up the ball on the left wing and cut inside and fired an unstoppable shot past the Forest Green goalkeeper from 20 yards.

Cirencester were very much in the ascendancy but were caught on the counter attack to make the final score 3 – 1 to Forest Green.
