First Team beat Wootton Bassett in entertaining friendly

Pre-Season Friendly

Cirencester Town 3 - 1 Wootton Bassett Town

On Thursday evening, Cirencester Town first team hosted our new ground sharing partners, Wootton Bassett Town, in an  entertaining match and came out 3-1 winners with all goals being scored in the first half.

Ciren started strongly and went ahead on 2 minutes when Aidan Bennett beat the Bassett goalkeeper to a long ball before lobbing the ball into the net.

On 9 minutes, the lead was extended when Dean Bromley calmly dispatched a loose ball as Ciren continued to dominate.

Bassett foguht hard to get back in the game and midway through the first half they were rewarded with a well taken goal by Craig Bowden.

However, Ciren restored their two goal lead in the 34th minute when Steve Davies scored from the penalty spot after he had been fouled in the area.

As usual in pre-season friendlies, both sides made several changes during the second half and no further goals were scored.

Somewhat embarrasingly for Ciren, the referee had to blow for time a few minutes early when the ground's sprinkler system started up to much amusement from the crowd.

It was a good workout for Ciren and Wootton Bassett showed enough quality, with several former Centurions in their lineup including veteran Shaun Terry, Sean Bailey, Lee Stevens, Alex Rigley and Adam Corcoran, to suggest that they will be competitive again this season after their promotion to the Hellenic League Premier Division.

Those Ciren supporters who can't make it to our away matches should enjoy getting their weekly "football fix" by watching Bassett at home this season at The Corinium Stadium.
