Our Academy win at Filton in the ESFA Under18 Colleges Trophy

English Schools FA Under 18 Colleges Trophy

Filton Academy 3 - 5 Cirencester Academy

Cirencester have made it to the Quarter-finals of the English Schools’ Under 18’s Colleges trophy after a fantastic win away at near neighbours Filton College.

Although Cirencester were due to have home advantage the game was switched and played on 3G artificial pitch due to Cirencester pitch being unplayable because of recent downpours.

Cirencester started the stronger and took the lead after a great free kick from midfielder Brad Hooper was flicked past the Filton goalkeeper by defender Adam Cooke for his first goal of the season. Despite creating several chances Cirencester failed to increase their lead.

In the 39th minute after a period of pressure by Filton, Joe Woodly played the ball into his own net after trying to clear a cross from the left. The score remained 1 -1 at half-time.

The second half became increasingly difficult for both teams in horrendous conditions of strong winds and heavy rain. Filton then took the lead when after a well worked corner, Brad Hooper trying to block a shot, deflected ball past goalkeeper Harry Ellis for Cirencester’s second own goal of the game.

Cirencester rallied and equalised after a cross from fullback Joe Woodley sailed into the top corner of the Filton goal to make the score 2-2.

The game then saw Filton pushing forward and with 10 minutes remaining Filton made the score 3-2 after the Cirencester defence failed to clear. However, Cirencester were not prepared to give up and with 2 minutes remaining a corner from Brad Hooper was headed across goal to Danny Hale who headed ball past the Filton goalkeeper to take the game into extra time.

Cirenester made a terrific start to the first half of extra time, scoring twice in 3 minutes. First winger James Piatek side-stepped two defenders before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the goa,l and then Danny Hale scored comfortably from the spot after a Filton defender handballed the ball inside the penalty area.

The second period saw Cirencester coming under pressure but they held firm for a fantastic victory away from home in appalling conditions.

The draw for the Quarter-Finals tales place on Monday 9th January 2012.
