Academy Win Cracking FA Youth Cup Match

Steve Lowndes' young Academy team, with five First Years starting the game, took an early two goal lead through Max Etheridge and the electric Robert Hoskins in a crunching first half. Torquay United, playing perhaps the better football on the deck but not getting within shooting distance, got back to 2 - 2 before half time and looked as if they would streamroller over the youngsters in the second half.

Ciren, pinned back, broke away to hit the Torquay bar early on but should have gone behind when a superb counter attack ended with Torquay skipper Ashley Yeoman setting up Jordan Charran. Calmly bringing the ball down 10 yards out all he had to do was sidefoot home but instead went for a glory volley and hit the bar.

Minutes later Max Etheridge took advantage of a defensive error, sped away and sent a sidefoot shot into the net from 12 yards to put Ciren ahead again. Robert Hoskins scored the goal of the night to clinch the win, coming near post to beat the markers and meet a superb James Guthrie centre with a cheeky backheel that ended up in the back of the net.

There was still time for Torquay's Ed Palmer to get himself sent off for an off the ball punch on Etheridge, for James Guthrie to slip a wicked long range shot under the keeper for number five and for Torquay's Ryan Beattie to receive a second yellow card for a crunching foul.

Ciren, having gone through all the preliminary rounds and now the only West Country club left in the competition, will travel to either Didcot Town or Buckingham Town in the FA Youth Cup First Round Proper, the stage at which the League Clubs enter the competition. Details will be posted when they are known.
