Blustery Day At The Foot Of Cleeve Hill But A Calm Display Gets Ciren The Win
A warm blustery wind was blowing out of the South West straight down the Cleeve pitch today. And the Bank Holiday weather lured a goodly selection of Centurions up the road and into this tidy ground.
Cleeve had six former Centurions on the teamsheet, and with Adam Mayo and Lyndon Tomkins on the pitch it was sure to be a typical Glos derby against a team who have more often than not come away with a handsome win when we have met.
Not today - Julian Alsop was virtually unplayable and he had good support from Matt Williams and Adam Heath up front with Rob Dean (who had replaced Nathan Haisley injured very early on) and Harry Etheridge showing their Academy pedigree with some good ball winning and accurate passing.
Behind them Gary Thorne, the unflappable Kes Metitiri and Andy Minturn refused to allow Gareth Hopkins and Lee Davis, both recent Centurions, a clear sight of goal in the first half. And conceded only one, early in the second half when Davis spun on the ball and lashed in a leftfooter.
But by then Julian Alsop had struck twice, the first a neat sidefoot off a Heath cross and the second an unstoppable, placed header off another Heath cross.
It was a good crowd, 162, and on that display the team deserve some full-on support on Saturday at Newport Pagnell in the FA Cup
